🎯 O que é o Past Continuous?

O Past Continuous (também conhecido como Past Progressive) é um dos tempos verbais mais importantes para contar histórias e descrever ações no passado. Imagine-o como uma câmera de vídeo que grava o que estava acontecendo, em vez de uma fotografia que mostra apenas um momento (Simple Past).

Básico

Sujeito + was/were + verbo-ing

💡 Dica: Não esqueça do -ing no verbo principal!

🔴 Forma Negativa

Negação

Sujeito + was/were + not + verbo-ing

I wasn't sleeping
She wasn't watching
We weren't studying

💡 Contrações: wasn't = was not, weren't = were not

⚠️ Atenção às Exceções Importantes!

"You" sempre usa WERE:

Mesmo falando com uma pessoa só:
"You were amazing yesterday!"

Nomes próprios múltiplos:

"John was here" (singular)
"John and Mary were here" (plural)

⏱️ WHEN (Quando)

When geralmente é seguido pelo Simple Past e indica o momento exato em que algo aconteceu.

Estrutura:

When + Simple Past

"The phone rang when I was eating."

(O telefone tocou quando eu estava comendo.)

"When she arrived, we were talking."

(Quando ela chegou, nós estávamos conversando.)

🔄 WHILE (Enquanto)

While é seguido pelo Past Continuous e indica uma ação que estava em progresso.

Estrutura:

While + Past Continuous

"While I was eating, the phone rang."

(Enquanto eu estava comendo, o telefone tocou.)

"We were talking while she was working."

(Nós estávamos conversando enquanto ela trabalhava.)

Quando usar o Past Continuous?

Use o Past Continuous para falar sobre ações que estavam acontecendo em um momento específico do passado, ações longas interrompidas por outra ação ou duas ações acontecendo ao mesmo tempo.

Qual a diferença entre Simple Past e Past Continuous?

O Simple Past foca no fato de que a ação aconteceu e terminou (Ex: I watched a movie). O Past Continuous mostra a ação em andamento em um certo momento (Ex: I was watching a movie when you called).

Posso usar Past Continuous com "when" e "while"?

Sim! É uma combinação muito comum: normalmente usamos while + Past Continuous para a ação longa e when + Simple Past para a ação que interrompe. Ex: While I was cooking, the phone rang.
